DIAMOND CARAT:
A carat weight is one-fifth of a gram or 200 milligrams. Carats can also be referred to as points.
When shopping for diamonds, think in terms of the per-carat cost instead of the total cost of the stone. To calculate the per-carat cost, use the following formula:
Per-Carat Cost =stone cost__carat weight
With this formula, you'll be able to decide which ring is a better buy.
DIAMOND CLARITY:
To examine your diamond, hold the magnifier at a reasonable distance from the stone- roughly about one to two inches away from the stone. Try to observe the diamond from all angles- top, bottom, and sides. Also, look at the diamond with light shining on it from various angles. If you view the diamond with light shining above it and through the sides,
you will be able to see any blemishes and inclusions.
DIAMOND COLOR:
Judge the diamond against a non-reflective white background. You could use either a white business card or a white grading tray.
Compare your diamond to other diamonds (i.e., master stones) with a known color grade. Make sure that the master stones are clean since dirt can affect the color grade.
Place your diamond on the right and left side of the master stones to ensure the actual color of the stone.
Make sure that you're aware of the grading environment. Certain factors such as: lighting, color of your clothing, the air quality, and the time of day/year can affect how you grade a diamond. You should grade diamonds with a daylight equivalent fluorescent light bulb. You could also grade the diamond under halogen spotlights, natural daylight from a window,
overhead fluorescent lighting and light bulbs.
DIAMOND CUT
When discussing the cut of a diamond, the term cut to jewelers usually refers to the shape, the cutting style, the proportions of a stone, and the finish of the stone (such as the polish and the symmetry).
The total depth percentage should be about 60% which is a good ratio for a round diamond.
Crown Height Percentage=Crown Height
Girdle Diameter
